    The Origin of Magic
A girl once went to the forest to pick some mushrooms and gorge on sweet berries. Although it was a lovely summer day, the sky suddenly opened and a torrent came pouring down, forcing the girl to hide under a tree. An hour passed and the rain showed no intentions of stopping, so she removed all her clothing, put them in one of her bags and resumed picking mushrooms. Once the rain ceased, she put back her dry clothes and went home.
As she was walking, a forest spirit called Leshii saw her and begged her to tell him what kind of magic she used to stay dry during such a wet storm. The girl said that she will give him her magic if he in turn gave her his magic. The Leshii agreed and taught her the art of witchcraft in return for an old bag.

Thus the first Wise Woman came into being – respect their power, but be wary of their cunning.

    The World Above
Every New Year's Eve, the white God Belobog makes war on his evil brother, the black God Chernobog to decide the fate of the New Year – a year of light, hope and prosperity or a year of darkness, despair and hardships.

There is another God who is neither good nor evil and is therefore Justice and his name is Dazhbog – the giving God. He is born every morning as an innocent child in the East, rises through the sky until he is a powerful man in the South and dies every evening a wise old men in the West. He is the Sun, the Law and the Truth.

Dazhbog has three daughters all of whom are called Zoryas, or Dawns; Morning Dawn, Evening Dawn and Midnight Dawn. the first rises early in the morning to open the heavenly gates for her father’s radiant chariot, the second closes the gates every evening as he returns home after his long journey and the third gently cradles her father as he lies dying amid a million glittering stars.

Morning Dawn grants us safety to last through the day, Evening Dawn grants us courage to last through the night and Midnight Dawn grants us magic for those hours when nothing else avails.

Such is the world above and its symbol is the Bird.

    The Russians are Coming!
I have recently been offered to write a chapter for an RPG book which, among many other very cool things, will include a chapter on Russian mythology and folklore. I am very excited about this, as I always wanted to dive into the fascinating and mysterious world of murderous Rusalki, mischievous Domovoi and seductive Willi and now have a serious motivation to do it in earnest.

As my research goes on, I'll share various amusing discoveries with you and post pictures and illustrations which illustrate this world-that-never-was.

As always, all sorts of comments, esp. those that rhyme, are more than welcome!

    Yours humbly,
    Yuri Alexandravich

    A little appetizer:

A Kikimora, illustrated by the great Russian artist Ivan Bilibin. You might not be aware of it, but there is one living in every house and you better be on good terms with her or else.

    The Dead are Rising!
That is not dead which can for eight weeks lie.
And with strange æons even laziness may die.
